FALLOW DEER:
The Red Ass Ranch has designated approximately 70 acres of rich, native grass land with abundant browse, forage and easily-accessible fresh water ponds for deer herd management. The dense forest that covers half of the deer pasture offers shade and shelter from rain, heat and cold, as well as protection from any predators that might penetrate the high-fence barrier and slip past guardian donkeys on patrol.

The ranch's primary Fallow deer herd sire, who has been dubbed Tennessee Tex, originally came from Mule Face Farms in Tennessee and was the 2005 winner of the North American Deer Farmer Association's Hard Antler Award. Not only is Tex still producing amazing antlers, he has sired the ranch's first season of young fawns who carry his award-winning European genetics. A second buck with the same exceptional breeding and European genetics has recently been added to the herd.
Fallow does on the Red Ass Ranch, the majority of which also originated from Tennessee, numbered approximately 70. These exceptional animals are from the same outstanding European genetics that are found in the ranch's bucks, with their average body weight ranging from approximately 123 to 130 lbs. This year's fawns show promise of the same strong bodies and phenomenal antler production as the generation before them.

Boer Goats
The Red Ass Ranch raises fullblood and percentage Boer goats for breeding and show, and currently has a herd of approximately 20 superior animals that roam the 70 acres shared by our Fallow deer herd. Our goal is to raise healthy and high quality animals with strong body mass for meat production, the show ring or for improving production herds.
Our goat herd is deliberately kept small to optimize our animals' ability to graze and browse on the abundance of natural vegetation in the area year 'round, and to ensure our ability to manage the herd and keep them healthy and safe. We augment the nutritional vegetation provided by Mother Nature with supplemental minerals which are formulated for goats that feed primarily on pasture browse. We also begin supplemental feeding for our bucks and does before breeding season begins in the fall, as well as during the gestation period and after kidding.

Kidding time is special for us here at the Red Ass Ranch. The last week before delivery, our expectant does are separated from the herd and kept in kidding pens so we can keep a careful watch for the birth of the new kids. Once they arrive we make certain the newborns have bonded with mom, are nursing properly and have gotten a tummy full of colostrum. Since our goats are raised with the prospect of being in the show ring, we spend time handling the newborns and earning their trust so they are easier to manage when it comes time for worming, innoculations or show.
At the Red Ass Ranch, we regularly check fecal samples from our buck and doe pastures, alternate worming medications to ensure their effectiveness and treat for parasites according to sample results. All of our goats are vaccinated with CD&T, with our does receiving an additional booster about four weeks prior to kidding to provide maximum protection for the newborns.

BAHIA GRASS HAY
The Red Ass Ranch uses an early spring herbicide and fertilizer to eliminate broad-leaf weeds and encourage growth of our pasture grasses which cover approximately 100 acres . Our first harvest in 2007 yielded over 300 round bales (4X5) of quality Bahia grass hay and we expect to have a second harvest in the fall equaling that number. Our prices are competitive with the market and our hay is available on a pick-up only basis while the supply lasts.
